Model Overview:

Inspired by the panel vans of the1930s, the Chrysler PT Cruiser caused quite a buzz when it was first released, for model year 2001. It was one of a few vehicles to herald the new retro trend and became an instant success.

As an entire decade passed, the PT's utility and versatility remained intact, but the hype surrounding it faded. Such was the life of the PT Cruiser: a bright spot for Chrysler that was ultimately left alone while other practical yet smartly styled hatchback/wagons were introduced. From a used car purchase standpoint, however, the PT is still a respectable choice, especially considering that you'll have plenty of examples to choose from given its decade in production.

Most Recent Chrysler PT Cruiser
The Chrysler PT Cruiser was produced from 2001-'10 as a four-door wagon, and from 2005-'08 as a two-door convertible. Despite sharing its platform with the much-maligned Neon, it drove better than its DNA would suggest. It was also versatile, with a maximum cargo space of 76 cubic feet, and there was ample seating space and headroom. The rear seats could fold down or be removed completely, and a two-tiered luggage area further enhanced the PT's usability.

Throughout its run, the standard engine was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produced 150 horsepower. A five-speed manual and four-speed automatic were available. Acceleration was adequate, but fuel economy was poor for a small wagon. For 2003, Chrysler added a turbocharged GT model; it originally produced 215 horses and later 230 for 2006. It was discontinued for '07. Those desiring more power after that time could opt for a 180-hp turbo engine on certain trims from 2004-'09.

Besides a minor interior styling refresh for '06 and the gradual addition of more features such as an auxiliary audio jack or Bluetooth, the PT Cruiser was otherwise unchanged.

In road tests, our editors found the Chrysler PT Cruiser to be an entertaining drive. It handled adequately, and its overall ride quality was smooth. The Cruiser's utility also bettered that of many compact crossovers. The main downsides included the tepid acceleration of the base engine and poor fuel economy. In its later years, the PT's design also became stale compared to newer competing hatchbacks and wagons. As for the convertible, its fixed roll bar made access to the backseat tricky and top-up visibility was a perpetual issue. We weren't enamored with it at the time, but it could be a good pick if you're looking for an affordable and stylish drop top.

What a super deal. Convertible and the wind blowing back your hair. I love the single button top off/down as well as all windows down, too! Gas mileage a bit low but this car is solid. People always comment the cruiser convertible is "sweet",esp. the cream w/black top. One tiny suggestion: hazard button too close to radio controls (you get the idea).

For the first 70,000 miles the vehicle ran perfect with no problems. Just as the warrenty ended, the transmission went out $3,500. Then shortly after that the ac went out $1,200 and has been troublesome since. The interior quality is great and tasteful. I am currently at 100,000 miles and have not replaced the brakes yet. Overall a solid vehicle still tight after 100,000 miles of semi aggressive driving. Great handeling for a little wagon and acceleration is adequate without the turbo. I was told by a dealership that the transmission problems are normal for Chrysler. I am afraid to hit 140,000 to replace the trans again. Poor trade-in value. Pay it up quickly and trade before 70,000 miles

I just boguth it two weeks ago and I just love it!!! its really fun to drive and comfortable in long trips, I already put 1000 miles on it first week just trying to enjoy it and test it too. Only one complain, and want to hear from somebody else with the same problem. the Fuel economy is really bad, not a bit close to the window sticker, 245 miles per tank on highway, isnt that awful??? that is like 16mpg. incredible, Im planning in take it to the dealer to check on it.

After test driving a number of vehicles, I ended up purchasing the GT Turbo. The GT turbo has all the attributes that you find in a more expensive car, but most of all it provides for great flexibility. You can configure the interior to haul five adults and or items. It is extremely roomy in side, allowing entery into the vehicle ,with out whacking your head into the roof line, which is unlike other Chysler products. Contrary to other writers, I have obtained 20 miles to the gallon in the city, which I think is acceptable, for a 215 horsepowered vehicle.

  • I Disagree - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

I have been reading some of the reviews on this vehicle and I am glad to disagree with a lot of the negative comments. I am sorry to read that some have had disappointing experiences but for me, I couldnt ask or more. Except for having a nis-aligned top, which the dealer quickly corrected, I have been blessed with having a marvelous experience with this little car. Gas mileage is poor but thats because of the turbo engine. Which, by the way, really scoots this little gem down the road. Ive had it leased for four years and now I intend to buy it out. Those who say the warranty is faulty have a bad dealer. Talk to the regional Chrysler rep. I like this car!

  • So far, so good (knock on wood) - 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser

Weve had this car for only 2 weeks but so far it has been a very fun car to drive and has met our expectations. But since we got it, we sure do see a lot of other silver PT Cruisers around town. ;-) We wanted a fun small car to drive around instead of the standard small car fare.

  • great pt - 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

Just bought my pt about 6 weeks ago, so far am really impressed with the way it handles. Smooth handling and ride. It is a base model but has a lot of options that others dont offer. Have had a lot of compliments from people ive never seen before. Only thing that Im not really thrilled about is the gas mileage , or should i say the lack of gas mileage. Highway mileage averages about 23 or 24, not good. Other than that its a really awesome car.

Love my Dream Cruiser and absolutely think the Tangerine is fantastic.

  • My experience with the 07 PT Cruiser - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I bought my 07Cruiser touring edition in 07 and like many features of this car including: the old style look of a 1940s car, the dash board features (outside temp., compass, avg. mi. per gal., mi. till empty..etc.), good cd player, good ac and heat, unique "handle bar" on passenger side, well thought out middle console with 3 cup holders and middle storage with sliding arm rest, smooth ride, good brakes and easy gas pedal, back seats fold down and can come out for plenty of cargo room, stylish interior of textured material. Feels more upscale than you actually pay for it. I recommend this car to those who appreciate old style of cars & who want something that looks nice w/o paying alot.

  • Claustrophobic people shouldnt buy this - 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser
    By -

I got my 2007 PT Crusier from a private car broker after I had got into a car accident in my 2000 Toyota Camry in Feb. Now Im a tall girl and my head hits the ceiling if I dont have the seats laid back. I am the claustrophobic type & since the ceiling also slants more down in the front that causes a problem for me too. The drive is a little more rough when I compare it to my old Camry. The PT does not have little cubbies like my Camry did and you sit very high up in the car to the point that you think youre driving a truck. The back seats have great head room though but the leg room is quite small. Its December now and Im trading in my PT. Hopefully tomorrow cause Im sick of driving it.
